Soccer Digest 06-06-2006

DC United #1 in Power Rankings.
ESPN.com still has DC United sitting in first in their MLS Power Rankings. United went 3-0 last week, picking up all 9 points and moved 10 points ahead of Kansas City in the Eastern Conference and 3 points ahead of FC Dallas in the Supporters Shield standings.

Sven to Real Madrid.
ESPNsoccernet is reporting that if Arturo Baldasano wins the Real Madrid Presidential elections, he will be bringing Sven-Goran Eriksson, current England manager, into the Spanish capitol after the World Cup. Eriksson has evidently verbally agreed to this move, assuming that Baldasano wins the election. This would reunited Eriksson with his current captain, David Beckham.

USA downs Angola 1-0 in scrimmage.
The USA played a non-official match against Angola behind closed doors yesterday, winning 1-0 off of a Brian McBride goal.

MLS Standings
Quick note about the current MLS standings. If the playoffs started today, the 3 largest US media markets (New York, Chicago and Los Angeles) would be left out of the playoffs. Chicago and RBNY both sit in 5th and 6th, respectfully, in the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, Chivas USA is in 5th and the defending chumps, LA Galaxy are last in the league with 8 losses. Garber & Co. have got to be keeping a sharp eye on this and must be worried to no end.
