3 & Out: Nowak is done.
Driving into work this morning, ESPN Radio announced that the 1pm DC United Press Conference was going to announce that Peter Nowak was being replaced by United Assistant Coach, Tom Soehn. Sure enough, I get into work and Steve Goff has the news already. Peter Nowak is moving on to become an Assistant Coach with the US National Team, working under Bob Bradley.
I think that this is a good move for both groups. It gives Peter a chance to work with the Nats and use his international experience to help shape the new USNMT. He will follow Bradley to the U-23 team if another coach comes in around May, which is a move that will help the Olympic team as they prepare for Beijing 2008. It could very well be setting Nowak up to be the Head Coach of the Olympic team, if Bradley becomes the regular National Team coach.
DC United will miss Peter Nowak, considering in his three seasons he has guided the club to the playoffs three times, won one MLS Cup and one Supporters Shield. I think that the club will be able to take what he instilled in them and move forward under Soehn. Considering that Soehn has been there for three years, the transition shouldn't be a problem, as Goff mentions in his article.
So we gotta wait until 1pm to see what United says, hopefully they have more than just the new coach to announce.
